Winter Tires for Your Car or Truck
Winter tires, also referred to as snow tires, give you better control on snow and icy roads. You’ll be able to turn more accurately, and stop in a much shorter distance. If you’ve spent a winter here in southern BC, you know the feeling of skidding on ice. Your anti-lock braking system will help you out, but even then, winter tires can help your braking system work that much quicker. Your family’s safety can be enhanced with winter tires!
CAA says that not only do snow tires reduce your braking distance by 25% but they decrease your chances of an accident by 38%! That could make the difference between a collision and a safe stop.
Winter tires are not more expensive than conventional tires. Over the life of your vehicle you’ll need to have at least two pairs of tires. Going with a set of winter tires gives you extra braking power when you need it in the winter months, and extends the life of your summer tires.
You need winter tires even if you have AWD. All wheel drive helps greatly with traction when you accelerate but doesn’t have the same influence on stopping and control while cornering. Don’t be lulled into a sense of false confidence that your AWD vehicle can stop quicker. In fact, a non-AWD vehicle with winter/snow tires can stop more quickly than an AWD vehicle with All-Season tires.
